sea moss

The internet is such a powerful tool. You can find anything you could possibly need and want on the web. During Quarantine, I was researching like crazy on ways to improve my overall health but mainly my immune system. I came across sea moss and was hooked right away. There is a long list of health and beauty benefits. As you continue to read, you will learn more about it.  The use of it dates back to the 1800s. Sea Moss, also called Irish moss, grows along the coastlines of the Atlantic in Europe and North America. The original color can be either deep purple or dark brown.

When the moss hits the air and starts to become dry, it turns to a yellowish color. Real Irish moss is multicolored. If it is all one color, chances are it is not authentic. Sea moss contains about 92 out of 102 vitamins and minerals that the human body requires to function properly. 92! Yeah, you read that right.  These minerals include but are not limited to.. Iron Zinc Iodine Sulfur Copper Vitamin B 12 Calcium Magnesium The list goes on. There’s 92 of them!

What are the Benefits?

Sea moss has so many benefits. There are some people that have been living with problems like insomnia, hair loss, brittle nails, etc. These could all be symptoms of a vitamin or mineral deficiency. I am not a doctor but here are a few researched benefits.

Thyroid Health

Sea moss is rich in iodine. Iodine is a micronutrient that is important for healthy thyroids. Our thyroid uses iodine that regulate our metabolism, digestion, and mood. Sea moss can also stabilize thyroid hormone levels. The Iodine, calcium, and zinc inside can help balance out these hormones and manage muscle weakness.

Improved Gut Health

There is a good amount of pre-biotics and fiber in sea moss. This can help replenish the good bacteria in our gut. Fiber helps clean out the small intestines and the colon. Irish moss contains Vitamin B, potassium, and zinc which can also help with indigestion, constipation, and other digestive problems. Mucus can buildup in out stomach. Mucin can bind to the music membranes and remove them.

Weight Loss

A compound called fucoxanthin in sea moss promotes fat metabolism. Because there is fiber in sea moss, you are more likely to fill full and prevent overeating. Carrageenan is also in irish moss and that can absorb water in the body and slows down the digestive process.

Heart Health

There are studies that have found that sea moss may reduce LDL, which is bad cholesterol, and acts as a blood thinner. This may help reduce the risk of heart disease. It also contains vitamins and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium. These nutrients can help regulate blood pressure and reduce the risk of hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease.

Reduce Congestion and Boost Lymphatic System

Sea moss helps get rid of excessive mucus. When you have cold, there is a lot of built-up phlegm and mucus in our lungs. The slimy texture soothes and heals the mucus membranes in the respiratory and digestive system.  It is also rich in amino acids, vitamin C, antioxidants, antiviral, and antimicrobial agents. These can help fight off infections as well as keep them away.

Soothe Skin Irritation

The texture of sea moss can sooth skin irritations such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and burns. Vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K are all found inside. Sea moss can keep the skin hydrated and decrease inflammation. It can be added with some other natural ingredients to make a facial mask. It helps the body produce collagen. Collagen tightens the skin and minimizes pores. Irish moss can nourish the skin and provide hydration. It can be added to a smoothie, oatmeal, teas soups, etc. You won’t be able to taste it and you are getting loads of good nutrients.

Sea Moss is a Holistic Health

Right now, more than ever is the time to start taking better care of ourselves. It’s important to keep your immune system up. Sea moss has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. In addition to this,  it is also a great probiotic which means it helps with digestion. Proper digestion leads to better sleep, reduced brain fog, and move energy. The Irish moss can also improve thyroid health because of the iodine components. You can add it to your favorite foods and the best part about it, you can even taste it. It’s been almost a year now and my body has transformed.
